The Best Way to Water Trees on Commercial Properties
Surface-level watering rarely delivers moisture where it matters most for large, established trees. The most effective method? Deep root watering.
What Is Deep Root Watering?
Deep root watering delivers water directly to a tree's root zone, 12 to 18 inches below the surface. It targets the feeder roots responsible for absorbing water and nutrients—bypassing the evaporation and runoff that ordinary sprinklers can't avoid. For commercial properties with compacted soil, it's the difference between a tree that survives and one that thrives.
Benefits for Deep Root Watering
Healthier, deeper roots that anchor trees and improve stability
Better drought resistance by tapping into deeper moisture reserves
Less water waste with direct delivery to the root zone
Reduced disease risk by keeping the soil surface drier
Improved curb appeal with vibrant, well-maintained trees
How the Process Works
Assess the tree and soil. An Arbor MD professional evaluates the tree's size, species, and soil condition to determine exactly where and how much water is needed.
Position the probes. Hollow probes are inserted along the tree's drip line, where most feeder roots live.
Inject water under pressure. Water—and optionally, liquid fertilizer—is pumped 12 to 18 inches deep by Arbor MD technicians.
Cover the full root zone. Probes are moved around the drip line to ensure even coverage.
The process is efficient and causes no lasting damage to surrounding turf or landscape.
When to Water
Spring/Summer: Every two to four weeks during active growth
Fall: As needed to prepare trees for winter
Winter: Occasionally in dry climates; pause where rainfall is regular
Newly planted trees need more frequent watering than mature ones. Early morning or evening is the best time to minimize evaporation.
Signs a Tree Needs Deep Root Watering
Wilting leaves even when surface soil looks moist
Yellowing or early leaf drop
Cracked, dry soil at the base
Stunted growth or a thinning canopy
Brittle, easily snapping branches
